Benign penile skin anomalies in children: a primer for pediatricians

2015

Abstract BACKGROUND: Abnormalities involving the skin coverage of the penis are difficult to define, but they can significantly alter penile appearance, and be a cause of parental concern. DATA SOURCES: The present review was based on a nonsystematic search of the English language medical literature using a combination of key words including "penile skin anomalies" and the specific names of the different conditions. RESULTS: Conditions were addressed in the following order, those mainly affecting the prepuce (phimosis, balanitis xerotica obliterans, balanitis, paraphimosis), those which alter penile configuration (inconspicuous penis and penile torsion), and lastly focal lesions (cysts, nev…

Parental occupational exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals and male genital malformations: a study in the Danish National Birth Cohort study

2011

Abstract Background Sex hormones closely regulate development of the male genital organs during fetal life. The hypothesis that xenobiotics may disrupt endogenous hormonal signalling has received considerable scientific attention, but human evidence is scarce. Objectives We analyse occurrence of hypospadias and cryptorchidism according to maternal and paternal occupational exposure to possible endocrine disrupting chemicals. Methods We conducted a follow-up study of 45,341 male singleton deliveries in the Danish National Birth Cohort during 1997-2009. Information on work during pregnancy was obtained by telephone interviews around gestational week 16. Parents' job titles were classified acc…

Sequential Cross-Sectional Surveys in Orange Farm, a Township of South Africa, Revealed a Constant Low Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision Uptake amo…

2016

Background WHO recommends a male circumcision (MC) prevalence rate higher than 80% to have a substantial impact on the HIV-AIDS epidemic in Eastern and Southern Africa. Orange Farm, a township in South Africa, has a free-for-service voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) clinic in operation since 2008. Following an intense campaign from 2008 to 2010, MC prevalence rate increased to 55.4% (ANRS-12126). Ongoing and past VMMC campaigns focused on youths, through school talks, and adults at a community level. The main objective of the study was to assess the change in MC prevalence rate among adults aged 18–19 and 18–49 years in the past 5 years. Methods A cross-sectional survey (ANRS-12285…

Oral human papillomavirus infection in women with cervical HPV infection: new data from an Italian cohort and a metanalysis of the literature.

2011

Summary A key issue in oral HPV infection is whether it can be associated with a genital HPV infection, or whether it can be considered as an independent event. This analysis evaluated the frequency and type-concordance of oral HPV infection in women with cervical HPV infection by means of: (i) a cross-sectional study on a sample (n = 98) of Italian women; and (ii) a literature-based metanalysis, including the experimental study the subject of this Paper and nine other published studies (n = 1017), which also examined the influence of oral sampling procedure (oral brushing vs oral rinse) and HIV status on oral HPV detection. The prevalence of oral HPV infection in the Italian study was 14.3…

Males of the tortricid moth Amorbia cuneana (Walsingham, 1879) shed their genital spines inside the female during copulation

2018

Abstract The genitalia of most insect species are composed of several structures whose functions are poorly understood in many cases. The deciduous genital spines (deciduous cornuti, DC) found on the endophallus of many species of Lepidoptera are a clear example of this problem. We performed two experimental studies with the western avocado leafroller Amorbia cuneana (Tortricidae), aimed at answering some basic questions about the biology of DC. We found that the number of DC shows positive allometry with male forewing length, indicating that larger males have disproportionally more DC than smaller males. Males, with very few exceptions, shed virtually all their DC in their first copulation…

Female genital schistosomiasis and reproductive tract infections. A cross-sectional study in rural adolescents in South Africa

2019

ABSTRACTBackground and objectivesThe aim of the current study was to establish the relative prevalences of Female Genital Schistosomiasis (FGS) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). We hypothesised that due to the use of syndromic management for STIs it is possible that FGS is being misdiagnosed and mismanaged as an STI. We therefore wanted to examine the relationship between FGS and the individual STIs in schistosomiasis endemic areas.MethodsBetween 2011 and 2013, a cross-sectional study was performed in 32 randomly selected secondary schools in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, where each school had at least 300 pupils. In a research clinic, FGS diagnosis, STI testing, and face-to-…

Evidence for sex pheromones produced by males and females inBlatta orientalis (Dictyoptera, Blattidae).

1993

Males and females ofBlatta orientalis produce a volatile sex pheromone attractive at a distance. The male initiates courtship behavior by adopting a calling posture while emitting his sex pheromone. He exposes the anterior region of his tergites by stretching his abdomen horizontally. Morphological observations show the existence of male tergal glands on the anterior region of tergites 1 to 8. Behavioral assays of females utilizing methylene chloride extracts of various male body parts reveal that extracts of the anterior region of tergites are highly attractive and induce more positive responses that any other body part. Once near the male, the attracted female opens widely her genital atr…

Sexual activity and life satisfaction in older adults

2018

Aim Based on the concept of successful ageing and research reports on the benefits of maintaining sexual activity in mid- to late life, the purpose of the current study was to examine the relationship between global life satisfaction and sexual satisfaction in adults older than 60 years. The study also analyzed the relationship between various forms of sexual activity (genital and non-genital) and both types of satisfaction. Methods Thirty-three men and 50 women (N =83) were interviewed by using two structuralized questionnaires. Global life satisfaction was measured with Diener's Satisfaction with Life Scale, whereas sexual satisfaction and preferences regarding various intimate behaviours…

Juvenile Xanthogranuloma and Nevus Anemicus in the Diagnosis of Neurofibromatosis Type 1

2013

Importance The diagnosis of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is based on 7 clinical criteria. However, they are of limited value before the age of 2 years. Juvenile xanthogranuloma (JXG) and nevus anemicus (NA) are commonly observed in children with NF1 and may be useful diagnostic clues. Objectives To evaluate the frequency of JXG and NA, to describe their clinical features, and to determine their diagnostic value in patients with NF1. Design, Setting, and Participants Retrospective medical record review of outpatients seen between January 1, 2005, and December 31, 2011. University hospital dermatology department affiliated with the French NF1 referral center network. Patients with NF1 diagn…
